European car sales down 7.1%

European car sales fell 7

European car sales fell 7.1 per cent in November, industry association ACEA said today, as economic woes and austerity measures dampened customers' demand for new cars.

European carmakers are looking to Asia and Latin America as demand stagnates at home as the scrappage schemes which boosted demand for cars during the crisis run out and fears for the economy make consumers cautious.

A total of 1.07 million new cars were registered in November, ACEA said. In the first 11 months of the year, car sales fell 5.7 per cent.

Sales at Europe's biggest carmaker, Volkswagen, fell 5.9 per cent in November, ACEA said.

Toyota sales fell 21.8 per cent. French carmaker Renault saw November group sales fall 12.5 per cent. Renault brand sales fell 16.3 per cent, while the low-cost Dacia brand saw sales rise 5.5 per cent.

Renault chief executive Carlos Ghosn, who is also CEO of Renault alliance partner Nissan, has said the company will have a record 2010.
