Weekend Wines: Classic wines at bargain prices

John Wilson picks the best of the new summer wine arrivals at Lidl

Lidl will gradually release its range of summer wines over the coming months. Some are rereleases, others are new to the shelves. Here are two classic French wines now in store that will certainly appeal to the traditionalist. As well as these, look out for two wines with strange names that are worth trying. The rich, powerful, concentrated Argentinian Gestos Malbec + Malbec is a real bargain for €11.99. For those on a budget, the How to Avoid Everything Chenin Blanc from South Africa has plenty of citrus acidity and subtle pear fruits, all for €7.99.

Muscadet de Sèvre & Maine Sur Lie, Domaine des Deux Vallons 2021

€9.99 from Lidl

Fresh light crisp green apples with a touch of lemon zest. A decent party wine, and it would be good with all kinds of shellfish, plainly grilled white fish or a creamy goat’s cheese salad. Good value at €9.99.

Château Bonnet 2018, Cru Bourgeois, Médoc, Bordeaux

€12.99 from Lidl

A mature smooth elegant claret with subtle blackcurrant fruits, some spice and a dry finish. This would go nicely with some rare beef, roast lamb, or roast mushrooms.
