John Wilson: Two good-value French wines from SuperValu that go down a treat on winter evenings

Two French wines from SuperValu this week. Viognier produces great winter whites, typically textured with plenty of rich ripe fruits, making them perfect for cold evenings. The grape, originally from the Rhône Valley, is now planted in the Languedoc region, where it can offer great value for money. The Château Sissan is a classic Bordeaux blend of 80 per cent Merlot and 20 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon.

I featured the Riesling and Pinot Noir from the German producer Albert Glas back in September. Both wines are on offer at €10 again at SuperValu, a fantastic price. Grab them while you can.

Elisabeth Viognier 2021, Domaine de la Baume, IGP Pays d’Oc, €11 (down from €12.99)

This has seductive, lush peach and apricot fruits with a rounded finish. Nice by itself but even better with macaroni cheese or a gratin of squash or celeriac.

Château Sissan 2020, Cadillac – Côtes de Bordeaux, €11.99 (down from €23.99)

Medium-bodied with attractive red fruits and lightly drying tannins on the finish. Drink it with venison, beef or roast aubergines.
