Two north Italian wines from Marks & Spencer

This week two north Italian wines from Marks & Spencer. Piemonte, in the north-western corner is famous for Barolo and Barbaresco, two powerful red wines. But the region produces a host of other good less tannic red wines such as the Barbera below. Moving across to the northeast, Venezia Giulia borders Slovenia and Austria. The region produces a range of white and red wines, including some from the local ribolla gialla grape, known for producing good fresh crisp wines.

Ribolla Gialla 2022, Venezia Giulia

A light wine with juicy fresh stone fruits, almonds, and a lip-smacking dry finish. This would be great with all kinds of fish and shellfish, or light salads. Herby prawns with pasta sounds good. 12% abv €11.75 from Marks & Spencer.

Barbera d’Asti Superiore 2020, Araldica

Quite powerful with fresh red cherry and strawberry fruits, a touch of spice and a smooth finish. Perfect with tomato-based sauces, or mushroom risotto. 14.5% abv, €11.80 from Marks & Spencer.
