St Helier, for just under €800. According to ebookers.ie the hotel is "perfectly located for those guests who wish to explore the delights of St Helier". It offers, we are told, variety in dining, including one of the most renowned restaurants on the island. The site, however, offers us a round-the-houses way of getting to the island, and, as it can't seem to find us direct flights from Dublin to Jersey, it suggests we go via Heathrow. We leave Dublin at 3.35pm, have a stopover of more than two hours, then leave Heathrow at 7pm. The return journey takes an even more arduous eight hours and 20 minutes, leaving Jersey airport at 8.30am.

On our own: Aer Lingus flies direct to the Channel island, making the DIY option immediately more attractive, almost irrespective of the cost. Our flight leaves on September 25th at 1.05pm; the return flight departs Jersey at 3pm. The total price per person is €133.27.

We can book our room directly with the hotel, at www.seymourhotels.com, but we get a better rate from www.expedia.ie, which quotes us a price of €370.36.
