Treasure hunt

Anyone willing to plan an outdoor event after the weeks of weather misery we’ve had deserves some support, which is why next weekend’s child-friendly event at Castlefarm, outside Narraghmore in Co Kildare, is worth a look.

On Sunday 24th at 2pm, there will be a treasure hunt on the working organic farm, with clever riddles, fresh air and exercise guaranteed.

Castlefarm, which is near Athy, produces organic milk, eggs, beef, pork and vegetables, and it has three Bridgestone awards. For city children, it’s a chance to see a working farm in action and get a close look at cows and chickens.

The treasure hunt is free, but don’t forget to wear warm clothes and waterproofs, including wellies.

Spring is just around the corner, so while you’re there take a look at – and maybe be inspired into action by – the Castlefarm allotments where amateur veg growers, who perhaps don’t have a garden of their own, can rent a plot and get stuck in.

The farm runs an organic growing course to help green-fingered novices and there are monthly talks with plenty of practical advice.
