Ever wondered how the Diaspora has been getting on? We’re happy to report that at least one branch of the family tree, the folk of Dublin, Georgia, have not been idle. They have made their mark on the world by launching and hosting one of the most eagerly awaited events on the sporting calendar, the annual Summer Redneck Games.

Each year the games begin, as befits an event that was launched to rival the Atlanta Olympics, in 1996, with a ceremonial lighting of the torch. Far less contentious than last year’s Olympic torch run, this one features a propane lighter that is used – to a backdrop of 1,000 dancing hillbillies – to light the ceremonial barbecue grill.

Then the games proper begin. These include such feats of athletic endurance as bobbin’ for pigs’ feet, the watermelon-seed-spitting contest and the national hubcap hurling finals.

Another highlight is the synchronised mud-pit bellyflop, while the hotly – not to mention sweatily – contested “armpit serenade” always has spectators on the edge of their reason.

There’s also a horseshoe- pitching competition that sounds as if it really could have its origins on the oul’ sod, except that these are redneck horseshoes, more commonly known as toilet seats.

Unfortunately, this year’s games are just over. But that means there’s loads of time to qualify for next year’s event, mainly by working on your T-shirt tan. Up the Dubs.
