A murder investigation has been launched in Dublin today after the body of a man in his seventies was found with stab wounds to his chest at a retirement home in the city.
The man's body was discovered after the emergency services were called to a fire at the home at Ravensdale Close in Kimmage shortly after 2pm.
Dublin Fire Brigade said that two crews from its Dolphins Barn station had answered the emergency call and found the man after controlling and containing the fire which had started inside the small flat.
It is thought the fire had been started deliberately in order to conceal evidence at the scene of the crime.
“There were other injuries to his body,” a fire brigade spokesman said this evening. A knife is understood to have been recovered at the scene of the incident.
Gardai said the State Pathologist's Office has been informed and a forensic team is at the scene.
The killing happened in a complex for older people which is run under the auspices of Dublin City Council.
A council spokeswoman extended its sympathies to the family of the deceased involved said it "would assist the gardai with any investigation.”
