Research commissioned by Tesco has found that its online customers use the service once every three weeks on average and spend in the region of £130 per order.

Internationally, Tesco's online shopping service is one of the largest in the world. In Britain, the scheme debuted in 1996 and has since been rolled out to cover some 91 per cent of the British population.

The expansion in Ireland was the first time the service was introduced overseas.

Internationally the company has copperfastened its position as a major player in the online market following its agreement to join Safeway in the US to deliver groceries to online customers across the United States.
